Happy Birthday America

237! Wow, Congrats. I know that sounds like a long time for a government, but Great Britain began officially in 1707 with the Acts of Union, but the nation has existed as a civilized nation with a form of government for centuries.

The no mater how “old” we consider ourselves, we are not old at all. To some of the more “elderly” nations, we look as if we were just created. In the grand scheme of things, compared to the overall timeline of the history of governments, we are young. Here are two of the oldest nations, both by constitution, and by founding.

San Marino, which is completely surrounded by Italy, was founded on September 3 in the year 301 CE. San Marino’s constitution is the world’s oldest, having been first written in the year 1600. Despite San Marino’s founding in the year 301, it wasn’t recognized as independent until the year 1631 by the Pope.

The first recorded dynasty in Chinese history existed more than 3500 years ago! The feudal Shang dynasty existed from from the 17th to 11th century BCE. Nonetheless, China celebrates the year 221 BCE as the founding of the modern country. At that point, Qin Shi Huang proclaimed himself the First Emperor of China. In the third century CE, the Han dynasty developed, creating a unified Chinese culture and tradition. In the thirteenth century, the Mongol invasion resulted in a Mongol rule of China, decimating the population and culture. The Republic of China was founded in 1912 and in 1949 China transformed into the People’s Republic of China that exists to this day.

So be as it may, Happy Birthday America, and many more ahead.

About lbannister117

I’m the outdoorsy kind of girl, one of those rugged beasts. Try hard, play hard, take no prisoners kind of people. I have the intelligence, and the feminism, but yet I'm still the hard-core ‘one of the guys’ kind of girl. I enjoy the company and views of others, and love having in depth conversations about everything under the sun, whether it be politics, the weather, an event in history, the news, or simply a good story.
